October Movie WIshlist

I realized that I hadn't done one of these in a while, probably because I've got plenty on my backlog of movies to watch on Instant Netflix and then a whole 'nother list underneath that of movies I can't watch on Instant Netflix but have to wait until I finally decide to quit netflix once and for all (I don't know why they had to go and make it difficult for me to get my DVDs in the mail like old times)

Movies I Definitely Want to See
1) Dirty Girl
This movie looks funny and a bunch of my favorite actors are in it: William H. Macy, Mary Steenburgen, and Milla Jovovitch.

2) Blackthorn
This is about an old and worn-out Butch Cassidy, he makes friends with a Mexican guy. I do like the westerns.

3) The Big Year
Jack Black, Steve Martin, Owen Wilson. I'm thinking the tried&true latter actors will balance out the hit&miss former. This could be really funny.

4) The Woman
This one is about a family who takes in a feral girl or possibly a zombie. It looks like a who's-the-real-monster sort of situation, a sort of monstrous-human dichotomy myth. (I like the way that sounded!)

5) Martha Marcy May Marlene
This is a thriller about a woman who runs afoul of a cult and they play all sorts of tricks with her head. Very psychological.

6) Anonymous
This is the one about Shakespeare's real identity

Movies I'm Not So Sure About
a) The Ides of March
As are most people, I'm totally smitten with Ryan Gosling and support his every venture. The political movies rarely do it for me though. I try to get into it, but if you see the kind of movies I watch, you'll notice a few genre-biases.

b) Fireflies in the Garden
This movie looks a bit feely for me, but I will probably end up seeing it on my own and they crying about it.

c) The Skin I Live in
This movie looks freaky. In a way it reminds me of postmodern feelings like in the movie Fahrenheit 451 or maybe even A Clockwork Orange. It could be great or awful.

d) Texas Killing Fields
Another movie about women being murdered. I've seen this already on SVU.

e) The Three Musketeers
I love the Musketeers, but this movie seems so unnecessarily steampunk. So I'm not sure.

f) In Time
I like this idea because it's very literal.

g) Sleeping Beauty
I'm often disappointed by fairy tale adaptations, but I keep coming back for more.

Movies I Don't Want to See At All
i) Real Steel
This movie appears to be about Rock 'em Sock 'em robots. I would much rather see a boxing movie about Hugh Jackman than sit through a visual assault of CGI.

ii) Footloose
Not starring Zac Efron, apparently. I watched the trailer and it seemed like there might have been a pretty neat opportunity for some social commentary, specifically on the rise of extreme conservatism. But I guess that doesn't sell tickets.

iii) Trespass
I'm usually the first person to stand up for Nick Cage, but I can't abide him in thillers or action flicks. It seems to me like this movie was tailor-made for Harrison Ford, or at least Dennis Quaid.

iv) Paranormal Activity 3

v) The Rum Diary
I still haven't haven't read anything by Hunter S. Thompson. Character failing.

April Movie Wishlist!

1. Hanna
Saoirse Ronan as a child assassin.

2. Scream 4
zomg yes!

4. Super
Promises to be humor combined with balls-out violence. A dark take on the superhero genre. Also featuring Kevin Bacon.

5. Meek's Cutoff
About pioneer's lost on the Oregon Trail

6. Water for Elephants
I didn't read the book. But I've read the back cover a few times. Can Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon play a convincing couple? Can I watch Robert Pattinson without thinking about glittery-skinned Edward?

NOT TO SEE
A) Your Highness
There's a slim chance that this movie, directed by David Gordon Greene of Pineapple Express, and starring many of the same dudes, will be funny. But I'm willing to bet it's just a string of codpiece jokes.

B) Rio
Again, maybe funny. Maybe just a stream of bird poop jokes. Definitely at some point someone will ask "Polly want a cracker?"

C) Arthur
This plot seems so tedious. And I'm was sick of Russell Brand before he even got started.

D) Born to be a Star
This one's a little risky. I'm a Christina Ricci fan and maybe Adam Sandler is due, right? That's how it works, right?

E) Hop
Is a bunny!

March Movie Wishlist

Rango (dir. Gore Verbinski)
It's a chameleon and he's a cowboy. That's adorable.

Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives
This is a Thai movie about a dying man, but it's a comedy. There are ghosts involved and it probably has a redemptive and uplifting ending.

Nope. Not tired of werewolves yet.

Just because I always meant to read this book.

Black Death
I declare this month's theme to be period films. And Rango counts as a period film. This one is about some monks too, which you'll recall was my pick from last month. That I haven't seen yet.

Sucker Punch
I've seen this trailer too many times to not follow through. And, you know, it's got sci-fi and some girls with guns.

Movies I don't want to see

The Adjustment Bureau (dir. George Nolfi)
What's the deal with Matt Damon's shitty movies lately? What was that last one about an angsty psychic? I didn't want to see that either, and I LOVE science fiction! Dude, we loved The Bourne Identity, now get your act together before people start thinking that Ben Affleck is cooler than you.

Take Me Home Tonight (dir. Michael Dowse)
What has Topher Grace done for me lately? Nothing. This movie looks derivative and lame.

The Lincoln Lawyer
The only thing worse than Matthew McConaughey is when he isn't acting in a smarmy romantic comedy. That's enough now, Matt.

Limitless
Not a Bradley Cooper fan either.

The Beaver
I want to smack whoever let this happen. It's about Mel Gibson with a hand puppet and God help us all if they pun on that. I would rather see Nicolas Cage in this role.

February Movie Wishlist!!!

1) Even the Rain dir. Iciar Bollain)
This movie is about Christopher Columbus being mischievous in the New World. I LOVElove movies about Spaniards behaving badly (even though we all know Chris C. was Italian), so this looks cool.

2) London Boulevard (dir. William Monahan)
This one pairs my ambivalence for Colin Farrell with my resolute disdain for Keira Knightly, but she CAN do a British accent well enough, and as long as Colin Farrell's not trying to act American I am cool with him. He plays a reformed criminal trying to make it clean by working as a repairman for a reclusive young actress. Doesn't that sound like a perfect Colin Farrell role?

3)The Scenesters (dir. Todd Berger)
An avante-garde directer turns crime-scene videographer and attempts to catch a serial-killer targeting hipsters (it's a comedy)

4) I Am Number Four (dir. D.J. Caruso)
Ok - this might be REALLY bad: Aliens hide on earth disguised as teenagers, wasn't that the plot of Roswell? Also, if the alien metaphor is about xenophobia, what does it mean when the aliens are attractive white kids? I'm gonna put it on my list anyway because I like alien movies. I like them best when the aliens are killing people, but we'll see how it goes.

5) Of Gods and Men (dir. Xavier Beauvois)
This movie is about my favorite kind of monk, the Trappists (they make that jam I like). Threatened by Algerian terrorists, the monks must decide whether to flee under the threat of annihilation or stay with the community they have swore to serve. Sounds a bit like The Mission, right?

January Movie Wishlist!

Ah! I guess with all the excitement of the new year and such, I forgot to post my wish list for this month, which is already about halfway over! I guess that it's especially important to do this now, in these dark wintery times when there seems to be so little to look forward to.

1) Green Hornet (Seth Rogen, Jay Chou)
Do I know anything about Green Hornet? No, but I didn't know anything about X-Men, or Transformers either, and those movies were kickass. Plus Seth Rogen is a funny guy, and I'm all about that. Even if it seems my movie choices are mostly high drama and ill-fated romance (just wait until I post the next one).

2) The Rite (Anthony Hopkins, Ciarán Hinds)
I think I've mentioned before my obsession with the more arcane elements of Catholicism. It reminds me of the mother from The Poisonwood Bible, a book by Barbara Kingsolver (I wonder why no one ever thought to make a film adaptation of that one?) who had, "a pagan's appreciation for the Bible, being devoted to such phrases as "purge me with hyssop," and "strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round," and "thou hast put off my sackcloth and girded me with gladness." Likely she would run through the fields dressed in sackcloth, hunting hyssop amongst the wild bulls, if not obligated to the higher plane of Motherhood" (p.30)

3) Kaboom (Haley Bennett, Thomas Dekker)
This one's coming from IFC films, which I usually like. It's a scifi-comedy about a bisexual girl who discovers something sinister in her Southern California town.

4) Burning Palms (Zoe Saldana, Paz Vega)
I think Inception or maybe Scott Pilgrim maybe unlocked this current trend of movies that play around with altern-reality, although I'll admit that the trope has been around quite a long time. Thia appears to be one of those movies with randoms people who have intersecting lives. It's also set in Los Angeles (Crash?).

5) The Absent (Damon Abdallah, Samuel Ball)
I'm just going to copy the synopsis from Movieweb.com: "The town of Liberty has many secrets but the darkest is hidden between twin brothers. Vincent and Oscar Burton are only 10 years old when Oscar finds out his parents are trying to kill him for insurance money. Oscar takes it in to his own hands to protect himself and his twin. He makes a breakfast that will be his parents last. Twenty five years later Vincent Burton is the best science teacher at Liberty High School until he falls for his prize student Katie Anderson. Katie has just ended a relationship with her cheating jock boyfriend Karl Pierce when she seduces Vincent. He takes her to his parents summer cabin and they cross the line when they enter into a sexual relationship. Vincent's twin brother Oscar is released from prison and decides to help Vincent avoid doing hard time. First Katie disappears then Vincent's list of absent students grows as Oscar does anything he can to take care of anyone who has knowledge of the relationship. Parents and teachers start to worry as the body count rises. The local Sheriff starts hunting Oscar but Vincent keeps him well hidden. The game of cat and mouse has the whole town involved. Innocent bystanders even start paying the price until the three face off in a bloody ending where only one remains standing."

03 December 2010

December movie wishlist!

1. The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader
I already said some stuff about this a few posts ago, but Dawn Treader was arguably the best Narnia book of them all.

2. The Warrior's Way
Combining my new love of Asian films with my old love of American westerns: An Asian assassin is forced to hide in a small town in the American badlands.

3. The Tempest
This is funny, I was just thinking the other day that they would probably never make a film adaptation of The Tempest because, in my opinion, it is the weirdest of Shakespeare's plays. I mean, what the heck is Caliban's deal, anyway? But here you are. Neato.

4. Somewhere
I was ambivalent about Lost in Translation, but the synopsis of Sofia Coppola's newest film sounds so much like a Bret Easton Ellis Novel (intellectuals refer to Bret Easton Ellis). So I'll probably watch it On Demand sometime in the near future when I'm up late at night at my Mom's house...someday.

That's it for December! We'll have to wait and see how many times I actually get to go to the movies. As far as November went, I was 0 for 6.

31 October 2010

November movie wishlist!

1) Due Date
Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifinakis in a road-trip buddy movie. I'm sure whacky hijinks will be involved.

Edit! Celia says Due Date is NOT supremely funny. Avoid!

2) Four Lions
I just discovered this one now searching for November releases on the internet. It's a comedy about terrorists. Looks clever. I guess they won't be showing it at the United Artist's though.

3) Morning Glory
Although I'm a little skeptical about Harrison Ford being paired with Diane Keaton. And even more skeptical about him playing somebody doing anything besides desperately trying to save his family and/or America. Also I don't like Rachel MacAdams. Maybe I don't want to see this one that badly. I dunno, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

4) Skyline
It's a sci-fi thriller with aliens! Alien movies are metaphors for xenophobia, and this one is called SKYLINE. I don't care. I like sci-fi thrillers.

5) Unstoppable
Or "Speed 3: Train in Vain." Trains need to be reintegrated into pop culture because I'm sick of airplanes.

6) Heartless
OK - I really like sci-fi thrillers, but my favoritest of all favorite genres is arcane interpretations of religious doctrine. Heartless is like Dorian Grey or Faust with a deal with the devil. Do you guys remember Bedazzled? Not the Brendan Fraser one...

Movies I don't want to see

a) 127 Hours
This is the one about that mountain climber who had to hack off his own arm...SPOILER ALERT.

b) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1
WHY WON'T THIS GO AWAY

c) Love and Other Drugs
Anne Hathaway is only slightly less irritating than Rachel MacAdams. Also the tagline says that love is the ultimate drug. Because it's about pharmaceutical sales. Some female friend will probably get me to see this with her sometime. Like The Wedding Planner and How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days, some rom-coms are hard to shake.

d) Tangled
Unless there's a montage scene where Rapunzel tries a lot of different hairstyles and/or hats.

e) The King's Speech
I don't care if Colin Firth is in it. It's about King George's speech therapist.

04 October 2010

Monday Movie Wishlist

Here's a list of the movies in theaters now that I want to see but probably won't, because I don't have a "movie buddy" here in Athens yet and going to watch a movie by myself in a theater is less fun than watching a movie by myself at home (where pants are optional)

Case 39: I love horror movies, it might be my favorite genre (maybe western??) I'm not wild about Renée Zellweger, but I could see how she might work well in that style, kind of like the naive and sweet protagonist of The Haunting (what was her name?)

Chain Letter: I haven't seen a trailer for this, but moviefone tells me its playing at my local Georgia Theater. It's another horror movie (about a chain letter? Maybe I'll explore this one on guess-the-plot-based-on-the-trailer Tuesday) I'll probably rent it someday.

Let Me In: Omigosh! ANOTHER horror/drama I haven't heard about yet. Sounds a lot like Let the Right One In, which I DID see in theaters and it was FABULOUS. The synopsis for Let Me In reads "an alienated 12-year old boy befriends a mysterious newcomer," and the poster has a creepy looking snow angel.

OK - I did some further snooping and yes, this IS the American remake of Let the Right One In, which was Swedish, I believe. Maybe this marks the upswing of Swedish cinema (those Girl With the Dragon Tattoo books/movies are doing well also).

The Social Network: At first I thought this was a stupid idea for a movie, but all I hear are awesome things, like comparisons to Citizen Kane. So I guess I'll have to get around to it.

Easy A: Emma Stone is a cutie; I loved her in Zombieland. I like teen comedies based on classic literature, and I like teen comedies (especially when murder is involved, but I guess that's not the case here)

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole: As a pithy sophomore wrote on my FB wall: "Owls carrying buckets of lava? Yes, please"

Devil: Just seems cool - I love movies with that old-time-Catholic bent.

I think that's all. I have a lot of homework today, so I probably won't watch a movie. But Jesse James should be in my mailbox soon, and I've got The Wind that Shakes the Barley as a backup on my instant queue, so look out for both of those in the near future.
